23 March 2018

Congratulations are in prder for 17 Year old Dylan Prendergast from Louisbugh, Co. Mayo,

a student at Sancta Maria College, will this Saturday line out for Ireland Schoolboys against

France. This is an enormous achievement as Schools caps are rare enough for players who

have come through the Youths system but extremely rare if you are from and play your

rugby in Connacht. Westport RFC are tremendously proud of Dylan and wish him the very

best on Saturday and also for the Easter tour to Wales.

Give it a Try: Girls Rugby Open Day

We have an open day planned for Saturday 14th Sept from 12:30-5:00pm and I need everyone's help to promote the event.

It will be an open day promoting girls rugby from mini level right through to under 18's.

There will be fun games and activities, face painting, and carnival style events and activities for all ages.

It promises to be a fun event and a great day out for any girls thinking of taking up the sport.

Any support you can give us would be greatly appreciated, as I'm sure you are aware being an amateur sports club funds are pretty tight but if there's anything you need from us in return please let me know and I'll see what we can do.

Rugby is a growing sport for girls and as the Irish ladies team has shown by winning the Grand Slam earlier this year there is no limit to what can be achieved as we are seeing more competition available to girls.

Girls’ rugby started in Westport 4 years ago and we're now going into our fifth season. In the beginning the numbers were relatively small but thanks to word of mouth and hard work by some of the players and teachers in local schools the numbers began to grow.

Westport has a great history of producing players and the current Connacht U19 girls’ team is made up primarily of Westport girls and the Westport U18's girls’ team are going into the coming season as reigning Connacht champions, so we have put ourselves firmly on the map.

The idea of this event is to try and boost our numbers and try and get more players involved particularly at mini level as it’s important to nurture talent at a young age.

Thank you for your time and interest and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Colin Weston

(Westport RFC Girls Youth Team Manager)

Westport U16 Girls Youth Team had the privilege to play during half time at the Rabo 12 match between Connacht and Ulster at the Sportsground in Galway. It was a big celebration of girls and women's rugby as some of the grand slam winning players from the Irish Ladies Team were present to showcase the Six Nations Trophy that they won earlier this year. The Westport team along with Ballina, Tuam, NUIG and Connemara were paraded around the pitch to the capacity crowd and formed a Guard of Honour as the Connacht and Ulster Teams entered the field.

At half time Westport played Ballina and Tuam played against NUIG/Connemara. It was a great occasion and the Westport girls did us proud as they played some brilliant rugby and managed to get revenge on Ballina following their Connacht Cup Final defeat last month.

That rounds off a great year for the Westport U16 girls who look forward to big things next season
