Connacht U13 Plate Final 2010

     Westport 14     Ballina 10

( see all the match photo's below report )

At the final whistle it was ecstasy for Westport and agony for Ballina after an epic and hugely entertaining Connacht U-13 plate final played in Ballyhaunis in brilliant sunshine.

Ballina dominated possession for long periods in the first half with their forwards particularly impressive.  However, an organized and committed defense by placeCityWestport ensured scores were never going to be easy.  Particularly impressive for Westport during this period were hooker, Jim McNicholas, Prop, Ross Bourke and loose forwards Stephen McAleer, Tadgh McNally and Fionn McDonagh. Westport's back line was also prominent in defense with centres Aron McDermott and Tim Costigan particularly impressive.  Ballina pressure was finally rewarded in the second quarter when good work between forwards and backs ended with Daniel Molloy touching down.  The conversion was well converted by Craig Reape.

The remainder of the first half continued to be dominated by Ballina as Westport struggled to get enough ball to allow their backs to show the scoring threat that had been so evident in earlier rounds with big wins over Monivea and Tuam.  Despite Ballina's continued dominance in the first half there were no further scores, with continued good defense by placeCityWestport including big tackles by Colm O'Donnell, Liam McNally and the ever busy Ross Prendergast.

Half time allowed supporters to draw breath and players and officials to take in much needed fluids.

In the second half Westport forwards, especially the very powerful Brendan McLoughlin began to slowly dominate the Ballina eight and slowly but surely the game began to take on a new look with Westport looking far more dangerous.  Good possession by Westport forwards from just outside their own twenty two allowed quick ball to the backs and when full back Paul Prendergast received the ball in space after a well rehearsed move his blistering pace allowed him to run three quarters of the pitch and touch down in the corner.  Despite a very difficult angle, out half and captain, Sean Ryder sent the ball over the post for a conversion leaving the sides going into the last quarter seven all.

Ballina quickly regained the lead when Cormac Reape sent a penalty between the posts.  Following the restart Ballina's Mark O'Dowd gathered the ball in his own half and broke the Westport's defense and looked like he was heading for the try that would surely have sealed this game.  However, superb speed and cover tackling by Westport's Tim Costigan  saw him run across the pitch to hold up man and ball before reaching the line.

As the game entered the final ten minutes another slick move by Westport backs David Hanley, Stephen Stauton & Raymond Sammon created another opening for full back Paul Prendergast, however as Paul seemed to be closing in on another vital try a superb cover tackle by Ballina full back Gary Kavanagh prevented Westport regaining the lead.

With four minutes remaining Westport's forwards led by Jim McNicholas, Ryan Moran, Tadgh McNally and Brendan McLoughlin burst out of their own twenty two and gained a foothold just inside the Ballina half.  Suddenly scrum half Conor Madden picked the ball and despite three Ballina players in front of him set for the try line.  Inside the first defender, outside the second followed by a straight foot race against Ballina's last defender to score in the corner. A truly superb individual try that sent the many Westport supporters crazy while the Ballina fans could hardly believe their eyes.  A wonderful conversion by Sean Ryder from a very difficult angle followed leaving the score 14-10 with three minutes left.

The last three minutes saw: Ballina camp inside the Westport twenty two; Ballina gain three penalties; however needing five points to overhaul Westport they refused to kick.  Twice Ballina pushed Westport over their line only to be held up as every  Westport player put their bodies on the line.  Eventually defensive pressure by Westport's Ryan Moran forced a Ballina knock on.  From the resultant scrum Conor Madden fed out half Sean Ryder who found touch. The final whistle followed with wild celebrations for Westport and heartbreak for a brave Ballina.

Ashbourne Trip away

Westport 61 Connemara 19

The Westport U15 cruised to a big win over Connemara at Carraholly on Sunday in the quarter finals of the Connacht Cup. The Bulls were slow to start with only a great tackle by Ruari Keating at one minute saving a definite try for the visitors. However, Westport found themselves 7 points down after three minutes when Connemara number 11, Brian Holmes broke from a five metre scrum and crashed over. Westport woke up and from the restart, the Galway side were penalised for holding on in the tackle. The quick penalty from scrum half Ciaran McNally was transferred to Dwayne Corcoran who ran thirty yards to touch down under the posts for an excellent try. Corcoran easily added the conversion to leave the score, 7-7.

Following the restart, the Bulls gained good ground into Connemara territory and at the breakdown were awarded a penalty for offsides. Corcoran's kick floated wide of the posts and was caught by a Connemara player. Kieran Nolan following up quickly caused a fumble and Paddy Glavey was on hand to touch down for an opportunistic try. Corcoran converted to leave the score 14-7.

The All Blacks were rattled and from the the kick the Bullls gained possession and set up a ruck. McNally fed Sean Tobin and slick passing through the back line found full back Keating who took off on a strong run along the touchline before touching down behind the posts. A missed conversion left the score 19-7.
The Bulls had their tails up now and were moving the much heavier Connemara pack around the pitch. On 20 minutes, hard-working Rory Ludden took a pass from Tobin and drew the cover to send Ian Duggan up the touch line to score a wonderful try. Corcoran converted briliantly.

Connemara responded with some good passages of play but were finally bundled into touch with a try saving tackle by Corcoran. From the line out Westport secured possession and kicked down field where the chasing Glavey got the breaking ball and made great yards through many tackles and was finally high tackled for a penalty. The quick penalty was fed to Cormac Groden charging forward and with the help of his pack behind him crashed over for another converted try for the home side leaving the half-time score, 33-7.

The second half saw the Bulls playing into the breeze. They gained possesion from the restart and from the ruck, McNally fed out half Tobin who passed inside to Keating taking a great line and sprinted a full 70 yards for a superb try which he converted himself. Westport kept up the pressure and a storming run from number 8 Michael O'Grady brought him to within 3 yards of the line. Eddie Dunning took the ball over the line but was held up giving a five metre scrum to Port. Number 8, O'Grady picked and drove on but was penalized for failing to release. Cnnemara kicked the penalty to touch and from the lineout Niall McCarthy latched on to the loose ball and made a great run to the line and though was well tackled he got over and touched down, only to find he was penalised by the referee for double movement.

Connemara kicked the penalty to touch and won the resulting line out. They were making ground but a smashing tackle by Zach O'Toole caused a turnover and from the ruck the ball was fed to Keating who ran nearly the full pitch for an excellent try and again converted himself leaving the tally 47-7.

The Westport management brought on a number of substitutes and showed the strength of the squad with great tackling by Nigel Mortimer and Killian Browne. The homeside were reduced to 14 men following the sinbinning of Glavey and Connemara took full advantage by scoring two tries and one conversion.
When Glavey returned he showed his determination by running nearly the length of the pitch for an excellent try under the posts. Tobin converted. Connemara were all at sea now and from the restart, Tobin gathered the ball out near the wing and ran in from half way to score a well deserved try which he again converted leaving the final score, Westport 61 Connemara 19.

The Bulls now meet Galwegians at home next Saturday in the Cup semi final.

Match Report   13/ 02/ 10      Westport 44  Ballinasloe 12
The Westport under 15 team have deservedly reached a Connacht League Final following an outstanding season. The months of training paid off for the Bulls on Saturday in Carrowholly with a brilliant display of rugby against Ballinasloe in the Connacht League Semi-final. Every player on the team did his part in securing this fine victory for Westport to continue their undefeated season.

The depth of the squad was evident when playing without three starting forwards on Saturday. Veteran Patrick O'Toole is out with a broken foot, number 8 Michael O'Grady injured his hamstring at 10 minutes and flanker Tom O'Malley left the field of play with a broken hand early in the second half. Credit is due to the four coaches (Joe O'Grady, Joe Corcoran, Tom Tobin and Dave O'Toole) who have worked with this team since their mini rugby days.

In perfect weather conditions, the game started off well for Westport against a much larger and heavier Ballinasloe side. A scrum to the Port resulted from a knock on by the Galway side, with scrum half Kieran McNally feeding the ball out to the backs. Good work across the back line resulted in full back Rauri Keating sprinting across the line for Westports first try.

From the restart, Keating showed great speed and skill as he ran 40 yards into Ballinasloe territory where he was high tackled giving a penalty to Westport. After a knock on by the Bulls and a scrum to Ballinasloe, the visitors tried to clear with a kick that was superbly blocked down into touch by McNally. With the Westport forwards taking control of the line out, a ruck formed. The ball moved quickly out to talented outhalf Sean Tobin who sold a dummy and ran in for the Bull's second try.

Westport were controlling most of the posesion and dominating play causing errors on the Ballinasloe side. A quick penalty for the Bulls was fed to open side flanker Kevin Hastings who charged forward and gained good ground on his second attempt. Again, after the ruck, Sean Tobin waltzed across for another try under the posts. Three missed conversions saw Westport leading 15-0.

Form the kick off, an unlucky knock on by Westport resulted in good field position for Ballinasloe. With a scrum to the Galway side they were able to show their strength and determination by charging through and effective mauling resulting in a try from Darren O'Hare which was easily converted by Owen McCormick putting 7 points on the board for the south Connacht side.

Westport quickly regained their composure and answered back in the best possible way. An outstanding catch by Keating who fed Dwayne Corcoran and out to Paddy Glavey. A few skillful moves and exceptional speed saw Glavey running over 50 yards down the sideline touching down under the posts for a well deserved try. An easy conversion by Corcoran left the score 22-7 at halftime.

At the break, Westport must have felt content with their dominance in most aspects of the game. The Bulls counter attack was exceptional. The North Division Champions showed superiority in strength, speed, concentration and teamwork. The second row pairing of Eddie Dunning and Kieran Nolan stole lineouts and some great tackling by Niall McCarthy, Kevin Hastings and Rory Ludden.

Westport came out in the second half determined to continue their strong performance. Ballinasloe were initially making good progress going into touch deep inside Westport's 22. Niall McCarthy chose to take the line out short to tight head Cormac Groden who showed his strength with a superb driving run to gain significant yardage. Another strong ruck formed with the ball moving smoothly out the backs to Keating. Following another good run he off loaded to winger Zach O'Toole who perfectly fed supporting player Hastings bursting across the line for the first try after the interval. A difficult conversion from the sideline saw Westport edge ahead by 22 points.

The Bulls didn't let up at all and from the restart were on the attack again. Hastings fielded the kick and set out on a brilliant run eventually off loading to Tobin on to Corcoran who sprinted for over 40 yards to touch down for the Ports second try early in the second half.

The Mayo side continued to dominate and controlled most of the posession however couldn't quite get points on the board. Glavey was unlucky not to get a try following a great tackle by O'Toole and Hastings stealing the ball from the opponents ruck and working it out to Glavey who was tackled just short of the line resulting in a penalty to Ballinasloe to stop Ports attack.

However, the Bulls kept at it and their hard work and very few errors paid off. The superb Keating caught a Ballinasloe clearance kick and launched a perfect Garryowen to the Ballinasloe 22. Hastings followed quickly and produced a smashing tackle resulting in a turnover to Westport. Following the ruck, McNally fed the ball out to the impressive Corcoran who crossed in for his second try.

Ballinasloe were never allowed to play their game as Westport continued to pressure and force errors. After great work from Glavey caused another turnover, the ball was fed out to Hastings and he was again easily across to touch down for his second try of the game. Three missed conversions in the second half left Westport with 44 points on the scoreboard.

Nearing the full time whistle, the restart kick from Ballinasloe proved difficult for Westport to control. Quick thinking and fast movement from the Galway side saw them chase it down, kick forward and touch down for their second try. The conversion hit the upright leaving the final tally, Westport 44, Ballinasloe 12.
The Bulls now meet a strong Galwegians side in the Connacht League Final on Saturday in the Sportsground.

Attacking the red zone - converting your opportunities
By Dan Cottrell

What you tell your players the session is about

Building pressure on opponents by going forward and retaining possession.
Converting opportunities near to the opponent’s try line – the “red zone”.
What you tell your players to do

Balance the risks and be patient. Scoring opportunities will come.
Take territory in small stages, don’t let up the pressure.
Support each other. Never take contact if there is no support.

What you get your players to do

Set up two 20 metre square boxes joined together along one side. A group of players move around in any direction in one box, passing between each other.

When you shout “RED ZONE”, the ball carrier runs into the next box. He then moves forward about 2 metres (adjust this distance accordingly) before either going to ground or turning for support.
The first supporter reacts by driving over, or driving in, and the ball is presented to a second supporter. It is then passed out, either with one or two passes. The ball is again carried forward two metres.
Ideally this happens seven to eight times before the ball is passed to a player who scores. Shout “TACKLE” every time two metres is gained.

Attacking the "Red Zone"
Attacking players enter the "Red Zone" on command after a period of passing and play a series of invisible tackles while recycling the ball towards the try line.
Developing the session
The training session can be developed as follows:
You act as the line of defence, touching the ball carrier who goes to ground.
Dictate whether the ball from the breakdown is fast or slow. The players have to decide how to proceed.
Add defenders and, eventually, tackling.
A game situation
The session can be developed by playing a game of touch rugby where one team keeps hold of the ball until it is knocked forward or a forward pass is made.
When touched, the ball carrier goes to ground immediately and the ball is passed away from the ground. Alternatively, the player can remain on their feet and the next player rips the ball and passes.
Develop with holding tackles, and then full contact. The defence is not allowed to compete for the ball when it is on the ground.

15's League Westport  24  Castlebar 10

14's League  Westport 35   opposition   5

Good wins for both teams well done lads.

Westport 24 Castlebar 10

The Westport under15 team remain unbeaten in the Connacht league after a hard fought battle with arch rivals Castlebar at a very wet, cold and windy Carrowholly on Saturday last.

This was a very different Castlebar side than the one the Bulls handed out heavy defeats on two previous friendly outings earlier in the season. Castlebar dominated the first 15 minutes threatening the line on several occasions. Westport were conceding height and weight to a much heavier Castlebar side and struggled in the very difficult conditions

However, Westport scored first on 16 minutes when full back Ruari Keating fielded the ball in open play, kicked ahead and found a good touch. Castlebar won the line out and decided to run the ball out of defense but were well tackled and penalised for failing to release. Patrick O'Toole took the penalty and charged forward setting up a ruck. The homeside rucked and mauled up to the line but were held out. Following the ball going into touch, Westport stole the lineout and scrun half Zach O'Toole found Michael O'Grady with a perfect pass who then dove over the line for the first converted try. Dwayne Corcoran converted leaving the score 7-0.

From the restart, Castlebar's kick did not go the required 10 metres and from the scrum a pass from Zach O'Toole sent out half Sean Tobin on a scorching 50 metre run along the touch line and finished brilliantly touching down under the posts. A simple conversion left Westport 14 points ahead.

This stung Castlebar into life and they again began to dominate play. The visitors rucked and mauled up along the touchline to within a metre of the Bulls try line but were bundled into touch. From the 5 metre line out, Castlebar gained possession and Kaimen Summerville charged over for their first try. The conversion was missed leaving the halftime score, Westport 14, Castlebar 5.

The homeside started the second half with the aid of the strong wind at their backs and immediately put Castlebar under pressure. The Bulls launched a number of high kicks into the danger area and an attempted clearance was caught by replacement Joseph O'Haire who gave a great pass to centre Rory Ludden coming at speed. Ludden accelerated, drawing the cover and sent Dwayne Corcoran in for a superb try in the corner. A missed conversion put 14 points between the teams.

The homeside had their tails up now and went looking to close out the game. However, Castlebar decided to keep it tight and their heavier pack worked the ball up the field. They were rewarded with a good try by Shane Doherty, however the conversion went wide of the posts.

From the restart, Westport kicked the ball long to Castlebar who again formed a ruck. The visitors were penalised for not releasing when tackled. The excellent Michael O'Grady took the tap penalty and charged forward close to the 10 metre line. From the ruck, good passing in the backline sent Dwayne Corcoran in at the corner flag for the final score of the game. Another difficult conversion was missed leaving the score at 24-10. The Bulls will benefit from this very tough encounter but will seldom meet as strong a pack as this Castlebar outfit.

Team: Rauri Keating, Art Molloy, Rory Ludden, Dwayne Corcoran, Killian Browne, Sean Tobin, Zach O'Toole, Aiden Shovelin, Niall McCarthy, Cormac Groden, Patrick O'Toole, Eddie Dunning, Tom O'Malley, Michael O'Grady, Colum Manning, Replacement; Joseph O'Haire for injured Ruari Keating

Under 15 Connacht ruby league  Sunday 29th November

Westport 15 Galwegians 5

The Westport under 15's continued their winning run in the Connacht League at Carrowholly on Sunday. The homeside started rather nervously and seemed a little off the pace, probably due to having not trained for two weeks due to waterlogged pitches and unclement weather. Right from the kick off, the Galwegians showed they meant business and were putting it up to the Bulls who had to defend stoutly in the first 5 minutes. Westport were offside in a ruck in front of the posts around 10 minutes from the start but the visitors normally reliable kicker missed the penalty. From the restart, the Galwegians rucked and mauled their way to the Bulls 10 metre line. Brilliant passing through the visiting back line resulted in a try in the corner however the conversion was missed.

The Bulls, stung from this setback, livened up and began to tear into the Galwegians. Patrick O'Toole and Cormac Groden gained hard yards which set up a ruck deep in the opposition territory. Kevin Hastings won possession and ran hard along the touchline beating a few tackles and scored a superb try in the corner. Dwayne Corcoran missed a difficult conversion leaving the score tied at 5 apiece.

Galway were rattled and were caught offside at the restart which resulted in scrum to Westport. Following the scrum, Westport's Sean Tobin kicked ahead to within a yard of the Galwegian's line. The defense fumbled the ball and Kevin Hastings was quickest to dive on the ball for another Port try. A missed conversion and half time whistle left the Bulls leading by 5 at the break.

The second half got underway with Westport playing with the aid of the wind. It was back and forth with both sides threatening to score only to be denied by the great defenses. Galwegians did get over the Bulls line but the ball was held up brilliantly by Westport defense. Ton O'Malley tackled superbly throughout and was an inspiration to his teammates. With time ticking away, Westport were pressing and Dwayne Corcoran was held up close to the line. The Bulls were penalised in the ruck and Wegians found a good touch from the kick. Galway won the line out and were awarded a penalty when Westport went over the top in the ruck. Again the penalty was missed and from the restart.

Dwayne Corcoran kicked long into the corner and Galway fumbled the catch and knocked on. Westport won the scrum and rucked well up to the line, but was penalised for not releasing the ball in the tackle. Galway kicked down the middle from the penalty and full back Rory Keating caught the ball and ran untouched for a try in the corner. Following a missed conversion the referee blew the final whistle leaving the Bulls winners by 10 points.

Westport now are top of their group and will play Castlebar next Saturday. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00.

West Mayo Lions learn lessons.

West Mayo Lions 6  Ballinasloe 14

Castlebar & Westport Rugby clubs are pooling their talent at U19 level to form the West Mayo Lions. Both clubs have experienced a shortage of players in this new youth category.

They played a league match against Ballinasloe in Castlebar on Sunday. This game was transferred from Westport due to a water logged pitch,  however the conditions were ideal, not too sunny for kick off just after 12.00 The Lions played against the sun and with a slight breeze for the first half.

The Lions piled on pressure from the off and were rewarded after 6 minutes with a well kicked penalty by Mark Durcan from near the right hand side. Shortly after the restart, which did not go 10m, the Lions were awarded another penalty for handling the ball in the ruck. This was on the left side near halfway but Mark Durcan was again on target. The Ballinasloe players got an upper hand over the Lions for the final 10mins of the half.

At half time the Lions took off an injured, Peter Lyons, who was replaced, by Michael Gallagher. Ballinasloe started the second half with renewed vigor and were quickly at the Lions try line and despite some stout defending by the Lions, they got over the line near the posts and they converted to put them a point in front. David OMalley replaced Sheridan Neuva. Thereafter Ballinasloe were awarded two penalties, which they failed to convert.
The Lions made many advances into the Ballinasloe half only to be easily repelled by long kicks from Ballinasloe who were assisted by a strong breeze, which was present for the second half. The long kicks gained ground each time making the task of a Lions score remote. This territorial advantage bore fruit in the final minutes, when the Ballinasloe No8 opened the Westport defence and passed to a center who went in under the posts for a converted try. This ended the scoring with Ballinasloe victorious at 14-6.

The Lions coaches have to examine the excessive use of kicking away possession against a strong breeze and the lack of urgency in most of the rucking and support play of the second half.

West Mayo now  need to work for success next week at home to Creggs. Venue subject to weather will be Carrowholly, Westport at 12.00 KO.

Westport Advance in the 15's League

Under 15 League Westport vs Ballinrobe

Westport 32- Ballinrobe 0

On a wet and windy day, Westport secured their third win in the league with a convincing victory away to Ballinrobe on Saturday. The Bulls dominated the game from start to finish beginning the scoring with Dwayne Corcoran making good progress up the sideline until tackled. The ruck formed and the ball was out to the backs and worked across the field to Owen Long whose running reached just short of the line. Following the ruck, Michael O'Grady easily ran across for his first try of the game in under 5 minutes of play.

A short time later, a Westport line out went to Cormac Groden who charged forward and gained good ground. Again the ruck secured possession and the scrum-half Kieran McNally fed his backs with Sean Tobin using the boot to kick forward nearly to the try line. Tobin followed and was first up with a smothering tackle. A Ballinrobe knock on resulted in a Westport scrum and number 8, Michael O'Grady picked the ball and drove forward across the line for his second try.

Westport was all about gaining possession and making use of it on the scoreboard. Good scrummaging on the day resulted in Westport winning a lot of ball against the head. A Ballinrobe scrum on 15 minutes was stolen by the Bulls and fed out to Tobin who gained hard yards before off-loading to Paddy Glavey and on to Rory Ludden. Following the ruck, McNally spread it out again to Glavey who transferred to Corcoran who crossed the line on his second attempt for the Bulls third try.

The Westport forwards were magnificent on the day and just before halftime, Westport robbed another scrum. Replacement scrum-half Killian Browne brilliantly fed Corcoran who swiftly laid it off to Ludden producing a nice run up the sideline for try number four for Westport. Four missed conversions left it 20-0 at halftime with Westprot dominating every aspect of the game.
Westprot kicked off the second half with a strong wind at their back and gained possession for the Bulls. Following a 5 metre scrum to Westport, the outstanding Michael O'Grady picked it and ran across for his third try of the match.

Possession was back and forth for the next 20 minutes, however Ballinrobe never really threatened the Westport line. After 25 minutes, Niall McCarthy kicked ahead and was first up to catch the bouncing ball near the line. Following the maul and ruck, Kieran Nolan picked the ball and with assistance from second row companion Patrick O'Toole drove across the line for the Bulls final try. A successful conversion by Dwayne Corcoran left the final tally at 32-0.

The coaches, Joe O'Grady, Joe Corcoran, Tom Tobin and Dave O'Toole are delighted with a promising start to the league campaign but have work to do before meeting a strong Galwegians side in the next contest.

Team: Aiden McDermott, Niall McCarthy, Cormac Groden, Patrick O'Toole, Kieran Nolan, Tom O'Malley, Collum Mannion, Michael O'Grady, Kieran McNally, Sean Tobin, Owen Long, Dwayne Corcoran, Rory Ludden, Thomas McHale, Paddy Glavey

Westport under 15 vs Sligo, 17/10/2009

Westport 29- Sligo 22

Westport under 15s continued thier winning ways with a hard fought victory over a strong Sligo side at Carrowholly on Saturday. The game started very favourably for the Bulls after Sligo had possession from the kick off but Niall McCarty tackled and robbed the ball. The backs worked the ball smoothly out to Owen Long who delivered the final pass to Ruari Keating sprinting along the touchline and in for the try. Dwayne Corcoran converted, making it 7-0 at 5 minutes. Cocoran followed with 3 more points from a penalty kick shortly after.

On 15 minutes, a trunover caused by the hard-working Rory Ludden, followed by good handling by the back line sent Sean Tobin on a brilliant 50 yard run for a well deserved try under the posts. Corcoran converted.
Sligo's huge pack was beginning to make things difficult for Westport and resulting in a converted try at 25 minutes. The Bulls answered back just before halftime with Eddie Dunning tapping down a line out ball to Cormac Groden charging through. Following the ruck, the backs again were superb working the ball out to the left winger Owen Long who dived across in the corner for Westport's third try. A missed conversion left it 22-7 at halftime.

Westport came out strong after the break with Kieran McNally blocking down an attempted clearance by the Sligo scrum half and ran in unopposed for an opportunist try. Dwayne Corcoran again added the 2 points to put 22 between the sides.
Sligo's big pack began to dominate and numerous Westport errors and missed tackles allowed the visitors back into the game. Westport vs Ballina, Saturday 10/10/2009

Westport 53- Ballina 10

Westport under 15s started off the 2009/10 league with an impressive win away to Ballina on Saturday. Cormac Groden's try on 5 minutes was just the start to a brilliant display of rubgy by the visitors. With the conversion hitting the near upright, Westport were off to a 5 point lead.
Minutes later outstanding runs by Ruari Keating and Sean Tobin with a perfect offload resulted in Dwayne Corcoran scoring the Bull's second try. Another missed conversion made it 10-0.

Westport's championship team from last year was split up this season with over half the squad now newcomers and many lads playing in new positions. There are some areas to be worked on in their play but their teamwork was superb for the first day out. Just at the end of the first quarter, a tap penalty to Patrick O'Toole who charged forward laying the ball off to Zach O'Toole who executed a perfect pass to Rory Ludden speeding past the opposition for Westport's third try in 15 minutes. A conversion from the far sideline by Dwayne Corcoran resulted in the north Mayo side finding themselves behind by 17 points.
Ballina did have possession and had some good passages of play but Westport never let up. The Bullls pack was superb throughout with seasoned players Cormac Groden, Niall McCarthy, Patrick O'Toole and Michael O'Grady excelling. At 25 minutes a crunching tackle by Zach O'Toole caused a turnover which Westport took advantage of and following a brilliant run from Sean Tobin, popped to Zach O'Toole and back to Sean Tobin who waltzed over the line for a well deserved try.

Ballina answered back just before halftime with an explosive run up the sideline by their strong running centre giving them 5 points on the scoreboard. A missed conversion left it 22-5 at halftime with Westport in the driving seat.

Ballina came out strong after the break scoring an unconverted try in the opening minutes and leaving Westport to wonder if the second half might be different. However at 12 minutes following a classy run up the sideline by substitute Owen Long, a ruck took place and scrum half Kieran McNally superbly passed to Cormac Groden who crashed across for his second try. The conversion kick again hit the post and went wide.

Minutes later full back Ruari Keating showed his talent with a high fielding catch, run and kick to touch in Westport's scoring end. Patrick O'Toole stole the line out, popped it to the supporting Michael O'Grady who layed it off to the backs which resulted in a brilliant display of rugby. The Westport backs showed prescision and skill throughout the back line as they worked the ball across the pitch and finally to Dwayne Corcoran who went across the line for his second try which he then converted.

Ballina was unable to get back into the game and it was all Westport for the last 10 minutes with an outstanding team effort and a great tackle by substitute Adam McDonnell. Dwayne Corcoran scored and converted two more tries and Niall McCarthy dove over the line for the final score of the game. A convincing 53-10 win for Westport on there first day out against one of their toughest opponents in the past will give the lads confidence as they take on Sligo at home on Saturday.

Westport: Nigel Mortimer, Niall McCarthy, Cormac Groden, Edward Dunning, Kieran Nolan, Patrick O'Toole, Collum Mannion, Michael O'Grady, Kieran McNally, Sean Tobin, Fiachra Gannon, Dwayne Corcoran, Rory Ludden, Zach O'Toole, Ruari Keating.

Subs: Owen Long, Adam McDonnell, Killian Browne, Aiden McDermott, Joseph O'Hare

YOUTHS RUGBY IN WESTPORT RFC.                    ( Posted 04/10/09)

Last week saw a number of developments in youth rugby as we commenced with some challenge matches. On Tuesday our Under 17 team travelled to Ballina for an evening kick off at 6 pm. It was a a very enjoyable work out for Westport under 17's as they romped to a 12 try destruction of the Ballina team. While Ballina were obsviously very understrength , it was still a wonderful display of running rugby and many of the newcomers to this age group gave glimses of their wonderful skills. A great display by all players and hopes are high that we can aquite ourselves well in Under 17 league.

Last Sunday was to be the first game in the league against Corinthians but Corinthians did not field on Sunday and as such Westport will be awarded the points for this fixture. Next Sunday, Westport will be away to Galwegians who are the present League Champions. This will be a very though fixture and will set the tone for the rest of the season. Kick off will be 12 O' Clock in Glenina, Galway. All players must attend trainning this week as this is a massive match.

Under 14 and 15' s :
Last Thursday evening both teams travelled to Castlebar for a friendly match against the locals. As Castlebar had only one team out, it was decided to let the Under 14 's play Castlebar under 15's in the first half and Westport's under 15' s play the second half. The result was that the under 14's lost the first half against their older opponents but gave a magnificient display of guts and heart and also showed much promise for the season ahead. The Westport Under 15 's took over in the second half and duly scored a number of tries against the Castlebar Under 15 team. The coaches were very happy with the performances of everybody involved. Also welcome was Sean O' Boyle who has now been added to this coaching team. No doubt Sean will contribute greatly to these young players, giving valuable tips and knowledge that he has learned in his playing career. Best of Luck Sean. Next Saturday, Westport Under 15's commence their league campaign with an away fixture to Ballina RFC with kick off at 12 pm. No doubt as usual this will be a very difficult fixture and anybody who can come and support these young players especially their families --- please do so, it means a lot to the guys on the field.

If you require any imformation in regard to this fixture please contact Joe Corcorcan at 087 1341696 or Joe O' Grady at 087 2070020. Also it is hoped to bring the Under 14's that day as well for a friendly fixture against Ballina. Kick off time etc to be confirmed. The under 14 league will also be commencing shortly so its important to have a big turnout. Any Parents who can give a hand with the coaches looking after both teams are encouraged to contact the above numbers. All hands and help are appreciated.

Under 13 Rugby :
The under 13 squad continue to train Wednesdays at 6.30 pm and Saturdays at 12 noon. Matches will be starting very soon. If you require any imformation on the Under 13 rugby please contact Aidan Costigan at 087 2215200.

Under 19 Rugby :

At this age group Westport RFC unfortunetly do not have enough numbers to field a team in the upcoming league and cup campaign which is a major dissappointment. However our near neighbours Castlebar RFC find themselves in a similar situation so both Club's have got together and joined forces in order to field a joint team in the upcoming league and cup. This is a new venture but one that has been broadly welcomed by both Club's.

The mentors are Phil Keegan and Mattie Bourke from Westport RFC and Alun Gavin and Mick Geraghty from Castlebar RFC. All are wished the very best of luck for the Season. Trainning commences next Wednesday evening in Castlebar at 7.30 pm on the pitch. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Phil Keegan at 087 0547236.

 News, views  Westport Youth Rugby

Last Saturday was a proud day for the club as four of our players were involved in the Connacht Youth match against Ulster in Five Mile Town.

Connacht came out winners 11 points to 7 and the Westport contingent of Jamie Dever, Austin Gibbons, John Gill and Joe Keane formed an important part of the squad.

All four of these players have been prominent members of the Westport Minis and youth over the past 10 years and now they are leading the way at interprovincial level.

Best of luck also goes to Joe Keane who has just started at Limerick University and has gained a place with the UL Bohs Academy. He will begin to ply his trade as an Under 21 in what has been the leading U21 side in Ireland over the past few years.
