Westport Girls and Boys Mini and Youth Rugby Registration
The new Mini Rugby Season is about to start. We invite all boys and girls to for the fun and to participate in a healthy physical team sport. Registration takes place at the clubhouse in Carrowholly on Saturday 18 September from 9.30 to 11.30. Please print and complete the application form (see below) and bring a photocopy of the child's birth cert or passport. Cost is €90 per child which works out at €3 per week and includes all bus trips and snacks on blitz days. There is a discount for more than one child from a family (see below). If you have any questions call Gearóid on 087 6165972.
Registration for the new mini and youth rugby season will take place this Saturday, 18th September, at the Westport RFC clubhouse in Carrowholly from 09.30 to 11.30. Mini rugby is for boys and girls from 6 to 12 years of age. Youth rugby is for boys and girls from 13 to 19 years. Please note that the youth girls (age 13 to 19) are required to register on this day too.
In what is a significant development, girls-only mini rugby is being introduced this season in order to increase the participation of girls. In other words girls will train and play with girls only and boys will train and play with boys.
Mini Rugby is a simplified version of rugby with the emphasis on introducing children to rugby in a fun-filled environment where participation is the goal. It is non-competitive, which means that there are no leagues or cup competitions, there is no grading of players, focusing rather on building a love of the game and of participating in a physical team sport. Each player is helped to develop their individual and teamwork skills, regardless of what their starting point is.
Registration for this year is €90 for an individual boy and €50 for an individual girl. This lower fee for girls is because the girls will incur less traveling expenses and it is also meant as an incentive to girls to enroll. Significant discounts will apply where two or more children from the same family register at mini or youths level. The fee covers the costs of all training sessions, bus trips to fun blitzes and refreshments at each home blitz. It works out at about €3 per session. Children registering for the first time are required to bring a photocopy of their birth certificate. The club kit will be available to try on and order at cost price on the day. Mouth guards and other gear will also be available.
Please download and complete the application form at www.westportrfc.com. For further information contact Gearóid at 087 6165972 or Declan at 086 8137145

What is mini-rugby?
Mini-rugby is a simplified version of rugby for boys and girls from 6 to 12 years of age. The emphasis is on fun and participation in a safe and well-organised environment. The season runs from September to April.
Safety
Safety is the first priority of mini-rugby. All activities are designed with this in mind. Westport Bulls mini-rugby coaches are almost entirely parents of children involved and have undergone training through Connacht rugby. Children are required to play safely and fairly. In addition, they are required to wear a mouth guard and are recommended to wear a scrumcap.
Age Groups
There are six separate age groups: under 7, under 8 etc. to under 12. Boys and girls play together in small groups and are gradually introduced to the rules and distinct features of rugby, such as the tackle and scrum. Under 7's are organised on a non-contact basis.
Training Times
Training takes place on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11.30am. Home games/blitzes usually run on Saturdays from 10am to 12 or 12.30pm. When we have away games on we depart Westport in time to arrive at the away venue between 10am to 10.15am.
Non-Competitive
In line with best practice and the principle of long-term player development Westport Bulls mini-rugby is non-competitive. This means that the children are not involved in leagues or neither are they divided into formal teams or abilities. However we do organise regular fun blitzes where they play games against other teams. The emphasis is on participation, enjoyment and the development of interest and love for the game.
Registration Costs
Mini-rugby membership rates are the same as last year and in addition all mini-rugby players registering will receive a rugby ball. The rates are as follows €90 for 1 child, €140 for 2 children and €180 for 3 children. Cost of bus travel to all away games is included in the membership fee. A snack is also provided after all blitzes.
Are you available to help out with the mini rugby?
All the activities of the club are run by people who give of their time on a voluntary basis. So the more help we get the better a service we can provide.
