Cheating in the Scrum ?
The issue of scrum resets is a major talking point in rugby at the moment. Having spoken to a few knowledgeable coaches and referees, this problem is only really to be found at the top level. Stronger, fitter and more streetwise front rows are trying to get the edge so much, they cannot keep bound on each other.
Who is to blame? I suppose we could give referees a hard time, but it is not always their fault. They are constantly having to sort out players who are trying, illegally, to gain an advantage.
Cheating is a fact of the game. It happens, but no coach will publicly say they coach their players to do it. Although in private it may be said that, "all the other sides do it, so we have to as well".
Joe Keane has been selected for the Irish Youths squad
Joe Keane has been selected for the Irish Youths squad destined to compete in the FIRA European Champoinship in Treviso, Italy.
During the past six months and six intense training camps, the Irish selectors have put the players through some serious tests. Games against some of the countrys top under 21s sides, plus an away match against Languedoc in Narbonne has given the Irish Youth coaches a good insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the players. Joe Keane has responded to the challenge and worked really hard to gain this honour.
Joe will be very proud to hand over his Green Jersey to Dermott Ruddy, who has seen Joe play rugby since he was 9 years old. Dermott knows Joe better than anyone at Westport and understands what this means to Joe, his family and to Westport RFC.
Well done Joe.

Hi ,
I was just wondering if there would be many college girls/club girls aged 15-19 that would be interested in playing a few matches as a Connacht U17’s and U19’s team? I’m just trying to suss out numbers, etc, and see would this actually be possible to put together? Can you let me know by the end of next week? The U19 girls must be aged between 01/01/91 to 31/12/93, and U17’s aged 01/01/93 to 31/12/95, and be available for training for 3 weekends in the Sportsground Feb. 27th, March 13th, and March 27th, in order to prepare for an U19’s match vs Munster April 3rd (U17’s match could be vs club sides and would be TBC).
I would need girls’ names, contact details and dates of birth for all interested. Contact

Fed up with bad news on the budget
Well here's more, Sports Council funding down 14% on 2009 figures
 |
 |
The 4% reduction in Irish Sports Council funding has to be seen in a positive light given that it was only in July that the McCarthy Report recommended a 33% reduction in Irish Sports Council monies. (Just wait until next year's budget)
However, the Sports Capital Programme remains stalled with the €48 million (down 14% from the €56 million awarded in 2009) allocated to it. These monies will, like in 2009, be used to meet existing obligations in respect of grants previously awarded. There will be no new round of the Programme in 2010.
The same can be said of the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme which saw a 40% reduction in its 2009 allocation down from €12.4 million to €7.5. However, again these funds are going to meet existing obligations under the first round of the programme which closed in July 2009.
The government also allocated €4.5 million to the soon to be completed Aviva Stadium. This sum represented the final commitment of government to the project.
The National Sports Campus received approximately €5.29 million approximately €1.6 of which will go to meet running costs at the National Aquatic Centre as well as other current expenditure whilst €3.5 million is to go towards the refurbishment of the old Marine Buildings with a view to the setting up of a new Sport HQ for the National Governing Bodies of Sport. The future of the Campus in terms of the development of the sports facilities remains unclear.
The Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund was reduced by 13% from €68.128 million in 2009 to €59.264 for 2010. Interestingly, however the Horse & Greyhound Fund was removed from the Sports & Recreation Services Heading where it has sat in recent years to this year being an individual line in the Estimates.
A full breakdown of the expenditure of the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism can be found at page 75 of the 2010

Buccaneers lose 5 points Their loss is our gain posted 12/11/09
Our good friends Buccaneers made a bit of a mistake in their team selection and managed to play illegal players in their match against Westport last weekend. It has been officially ruled by the CBIRFU games committee that they lose 5 points (giving them a season total of - 2 points ) This is the second time this season that this has happened, plus not managing to put in a team sheet in their match against OLBC.
Westport gains the 5 points bringing us up to fourth position in the league. It's a shame that Buccaneers seem to have an ongoing problem with team selection in the JD1 league and perhaps they may consider their position next season and concentrate on their AIB matches and leave the rugby to the teams that take the league seriously.

European Mobility Week News (Posted 20/09/09)
Main event is on Saturday 19th and includes a cycle to Newport for all those interested.
There's also a competition being held to find 'Westports Smartest Mover' so we'd like to ask the clubs does any of their members cycle, walk, take the us, car pool when they come to training, matches, competitions or even going to school or to work? If so they could be a candidate for Westport's Smartest Mover Award, all suggestions should be sent in to news@mayonews.ie and the reason you think they are Westports Smartest Mover.
International Car Free Day is then on Tuesday 22nd so we're encouraging people to walk, cycle, car pool, take the bus or the train instead of taking their car for the day. The aim of this is reduce the number of cars on the road and in turn reduce carbon emmissions, improve health and improve the standard of living in Mayo.

Autumn Tag News from Tommy Cadden
The competition is heating up at this stage with most teams getting very competitive. The Usual Suspects got a win against the highly fancied Geraghtys Gladiators. The Rogues just beat Any Given Wednesday by one point with a try scored in the last play of the game. The Tarts who have upped their game this time around just beat The Kaizer Sozes. Last Summers winners the Milky Bar Kids kept up the winning habit and dispatched Corrib Oil. There are only two more Wednesday nights left and one Friday night. Team registration fees (€240) are now due and will be collected next Wednesday. If you have any queries, please call Tommy on 087 6488594. Results so far on, All Results page
HONOURING THE UNSUNG HEROES OF IRISH SPORT
O’Rourke and Jason Sherlock to launch the 2009 National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport.
The 2009 National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport is an initiative of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Sports which represents some 68 sports in Ireland. The scheme is being supported by Setanta Sports and the Irish Sports Council.
The Awards will honour eleven individuals who are representative of the 400,000 people who volunteer their time and effort to sport in Ireland each year through their involvement with sports clubs and organisations throughout the country. The first programme of National Awards to Volunteers in Sport was successfully held in 2007. The award winners will be selected by a committee chaired by Olympic gold medal winner, Dr Ronnie Delany and the Awards will be presented by the Minister in January 2010.
In 2007 Erris Utd Sports Volunteer Eric Reilly was a recipient of an award in the inaugural scheme.
. While we have many professional coaches and administrators at the highest level we should also remember the many volunteers who still give freely of their time at all levels of Irish sport to ensure we all have the opportunity to participate in sport."
Nominations for the Awards can be made by individuals or clubs on-line at www.volunteersinsport.ie which includes full guidelines and details on the 2009 Awards.
( with typical modest reluctance the webmaster will be pleased to accept

The laws ammended and otherwise explained ,read this page and impress the know it alls in the bar after a match, plus annoy the ref with your knowledge of where he went wrong.
Smokers who visit the club will be able to have a pint and a smoke after a match in relative comfort, which should encourage people to stay a little longer and increase the bar turnover as we are promised an enclosed smoking area. As in the Kevin Costener film " Field of Dreams " the phrase was " build it and they will come" (In your field of dreams say some its still not done by 31st Sept 2009)

“Many local sports organisations including GAA, soccer, rugby, golf, tennis, camogie, cycling, boxing, road bowling, water sports including canoeing, sailing etc are coming together to provide a come and try it challenge to all. All sports organisations deserve to be commended for their great community work and I would appeal for all local clubs to become involved on the day”
Cllr Staunton went on to say.
It is hoped that some well known sports personalities from the soccer, GAA & rugby world will be in attendance and try out some of the challenges. Many organisations including Westport Town Council, Mayo County Council, Mayo Sports Partnership, Irish Sports Council, Failte Ireland, Chamber of Commerce, Gardaí, Mayo VEC, GMIT, Mayo Water Safety Committee, Family Resource Centre, Local Sports Organisations and many others are pooling resources in an effort to make this day a success. Many local businesses are also providing much needed support on the day.
“The support has been tremendous from all sides and on behalf of the committee I would like to thank everyone we approached. In the current climate its all about making an event sustainable and mainly cost free.” commented Mayo Sports Partnership co-ordinator and committee member Charlie Lambert.
In a further boost to the day the festival organisers were the lucky winners of a free, live, nationwide broadcast for their community event thanks to RTE 2fm and Kellogg’s Let’s Get Active campaign which takes place throughout the month of August.. Celebrity DJ Larry Gogan will be booming out the hits from 2pm – 5pm.
Jim McNeill, Managing Director, Kellogg’s said, “We’ve teamed up with RTE 2fm again this year as part of our Let’s Get Active campaign following a roaring success last year. This year is going to be even bigger and better with fun, exciting events such as the Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day. We hope everyone has a really enjoyable day out.”
So pencil in Sunday afternoon 1pm – 5pm Sunday 23rd August on the South Mall Westport for an unforgettable experience. For further information on how to enter any of the above events or on the day in general contact Mayo Sports Partnership at 094 9047025

RTEs 2FM to visit Westport Sports Festival
Legendary DJ Larry Gogan is to broadcast his Sunday 2pm – 5pm afternoon show on Sunday 23rd August as part of the programme of events in the Westport Festival of Sport. Kelloggs are sponsoring the visit as part of its joint ‘Be Active’ campaign with the national broadcaster which takes place during the month of August. Selected from a huge amount of entries the event aims to provide participation opportunities for all including a family fun activity challenge ( involving 12 different sports ), water sports on the mall river, a 5K Fun Run, traditional sports (including road bowling and a long puck), Nordic Walking ( walking using specialized poles ), the Mayo Team Challenge ( Fun and craic for teams of 6 ), Street Orienteering ( discover Westport through locating hidden markers ) and much more.
Speaking on preparations for the day event co-ordinator Charlie Lambert of the Mayo Sports Partnership stated
“ Being selected to host the 2FM roadcaster is a huge boost in the promotion of the day. The onus is on us, the organizing committee, to make this a great occasion for all. There is something for everybody to take part in and it is mainly a free event. So we would like to invite everybody to come along and have a great day out”
The festival coincides with the Gaelforce West Adventure Race which is attracting some 2,500 racers to the area on Saturday 22nd August. Activities will kick off on Sunday at 1pm with the Caitheoirleach of Westport Town Council Cllr Myles Staunton opening proceedings. It is also hoped that some famous sports personalities will also be in attendance to try their hand at some of the activities. More information on that is to follow. While the event is mainly free of charge, with minimal entry fees being collected for the 5K and the team challenge, members of the public can make a small donation, if they wish, to the Cove Youth Centre which badly needs support at this moment and time.
