We at Westport can pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve when it comes to Girls’ Rugby having successfully fielded Age Grade and Minis teams for a couple of seasons now.

The IRFU Youth committee has noted that In other parts there is still some resistance and little support in clubs for Girls’ rugby. At these clubs their lack of awareness of ‘belonging in Rugby’ at club and Branch as well as “outdated attitudes” to women in sport – particularly rugby – slows the process of integration down significantly.

Not so at Westport Bulls!

Fortunately for us we have a club and a committee that are 100% behind Girls’ rugby and they share our huge enthusiasm and desire in becoming part of the “rugby family” and they recognise the role women and girls will have in the future of not only Westport Bulls RFC but also Connacht and Irish Rugby.

A meeting was held on 20th June in Castlebar that looked to further integrate Girls’ rugby in Connacht and this demonstrates the level of commitment the IRFU is putting behind it.

Issues identified and discussed included:

Date of Eligibility & Age Categories

Regulations and Variations

Coach Education

Long Term Player Development pathway

Support of Development Staff

Awareness of Girls’ Rugby

Season Plan, Fixtures & Geographical Challenges

2012-2013 will see an exciting time for Girls’ Age Grade rugby and Westport will again lead from the front through representation at club and provincial level.

Coaching and other resources are being identified to meet the increased demand and to ensure that Westport Bulls Girls’ rugby continues to be No. 1 in Connacht!
