Minis girls took part in a silent game initiative in Claremorris today. All coaches and spectators were silent from the sidelines, the only voices heard were those of the players and all the decision making was theirs. The girls had a great day.

Rugby review 2012 - 2013

What a fabulous year it has been for the Mini Girls in Westport. We had a great time hosting and going to blitzes in various clubs in Connacht. It’s great, that we now have 7 Clubs to play. Only 3 years ago, we were the only Club with a girls section in Connacht. It’s wonderful to see the growth and demand for it. The girls have played fair, with honesty and integrity throughout the year.

One of the highlights of the year was when the entire mini girl’s from Connacht were invited to the Sportsground in Galway in January for the Connacht v Zebre match. They paraded around the arena before the match. This was followed by a guard of honour to welcome the 2 teams on the pitch. The Westport girls played their half time matches with Great Spirit and gusto. They also enjoyed watching Connacht beat Zebre that evening.

We would like to wish Grace Browne-Moran, Ailbhe Fitzsimmons & Sarah Bourke all the best in the future. They will be missed by all the girls and coaches. They will be moving up to youth rugby in September. They could one day maybe follow in the footsteps of the Irish Women’s Rugby Team who secured an historic first ever Grand Slam and RBS 6 Nations Championship win against Italy on St Patrick’s Day. Women’s Rugby is one of the world’s major growth team sports and continues to reach out and engage more women and girls than ever before. The future is looking distinctly bright for Women’s Rugby.

Happy New Year everyone,
The girls have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. The Claremorris blitz is now scheduled for the 26th January. The Mini Girls have been invited to take part in the half time show for the Connacht vs Zebre game on Friday the 18th January 2013 in the Sportsground, Galway. All the girls in the mini section will be invited to take part in the parade, and play at half time. The Mini Girls have free entrance to the Sportsground on the night. They will need €5 to €10 each to cover something to eat on the way back. Parents and other brothers or sisters are welcome to come also and can purchase their tickets on Ticketmaster, in the Branch or at the stand at a cost of €30 per adult and €10 per child.
We need definite names of all people travelling this Saturday at training.

During the match, the only people on the pitch are the girls playing and the referees. Coaches are to remain on the sand with subs and parents are to remain in the stands. The bus on the evening will leave from Tesco car park. We still have to decide a departure time. We will let you know early next week.

On another note:- well done to everyone for turning out in such high numbers for the 2012 Christmas Day swim in aid of the Rugby club and Mayo Cancer Care. Please can everyone return the sponsorship cards this Sat along with all money?

All the mini girls played brilliantly and represented their club really well at Galwegians last Saturday. They showed superb team spirit and clearly enjoyed the day and were all eager to play. The older mini girl team played 4 matches in all and only lost one of these! The behaviour, play and team spirit of the girls was outstanding. Well done everyone!

The Mini Girls first Lep Rugby Blitz season kicked off last Saturday In Ballina. The girls played Ballina, Claremorris, Galwegian's, Tuam & South Sligo. A great day was had by all. Some 100 girls were in action and the emphasis was on fun and participation. It was great to see such a large group of mini girls at the blitz and it was very clear from the onset how much they were enjoying it!. The Westport girls played really well and their skills and attitude were impressive. Oughterard, Loughrea & Castlebar are setting up a mini girls section shortly. That will mean we have 9 clubs with a mini girls section. We have our home blitz on the 3rd November and we expect 100 plus girls. We want to make this blitz a great success. We will be looking for help and support on the day. Home training this Saturday from 10am to 11.30am.

Change of date for Lep Rugby Course.

Wendy Hickey, Women's Community Rugby Officer - Connacht will be providing a Lep rugby course for women only on Saturday, September 29nd from 12:00-4:00 in Ballyhaunis RFC .  The course is free of charge and is aimed at women interested in coaching or helping the girls mini teams. Please contact Dolores Shanahan at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like to attend.  Dolores will need to know numbers by Tuesday 25th September.

This is a great opportunity to find out about rugby for girls in a fun and friendly environment with others in the same boat as you!

Girls Dates for the first part of the Season are as follows:

October 6th 2012 - Ballina

November 3rd 2012 - Westport

December 1st 2012 - Galwegians

January 12th 2013 - Claremorris

more dates will be announced before Christmas and hope to include Tuam, South Sligo and Castlebar.

As pre- season training begins, Connacht have revealed their 1st choice Front Row for the 2012-2013 Season.  The new IRFU approved headgear has had a mixed reception but the two versions on show here seem popular with the players.  Asked to comment on the size difference between the players a spokesman stated '...as long as Henry can lose the neccessary weight we don't see it as a problem...'
