Westport U-15’s Rugby Report Season 2011/2012

 • Started off the season under new head coach Des Reidy

•First game was a friendly at home to Galwegians. Good game, good performance and a narrow victory

•Our league consisted of: Tuam Ballaghaderran Ballyhaunis Carrick on Shannon Claremorris entered but did not field a team

 • Unfortunately all the league games proved to be very one sided with big victories against all

 • The lack of completion was a disappointment, however it did allow experimentation Players in different positions Different players

• To compensate we tried to organise additional friendly games, however due to the poor weather and a backlog of games we were only able to secure one additional game, an away match to Castlebar. This game was arranged for a Friday night under floodlights. Unfortunately unknown to us it clashed with a teenage disco at the clubhouse & we ended up travelling with an under strength squad. We were beaten, but given the players we were missing the performance was decent.

• The semi final of the league saw us play Monivea at home. Despite playing well, especially against a strong wind in the first half we lost to the eventual league winners on a score line of 12 to 19.

• The cup draw gave us a home draw vs. Ballina. Injuries to key players during the game but especially ill discipline (two players sent off) saw us lose a game we should have won on a score line of 21 to 24.

• This game was to be Sean Ryder’s (out half) and Ryan Moran’s last game of the season, out through injury. Thankfully both are now fully recovered.

• The draw for the plate saw us go away to Loughrea. Despite some difficulties before the game – Des directing the Bus to Ballinsloe and a few questionable referee decisions during the match, victory was secured by 33 points to 17.

 • The next round saw us host Connemara. Despite missing many players through injury (4 of the normal back line) we were the better team only to give away two sloppy tries and eventually lose on a score line of 28 points to 21. This game ended our season.

• Season Stats.: Played 10 Won 6 Lost 4

• Overall a mixed campaign but with the aid of Junior Cup campaign in Rice College, more luck with injuries & better discipline the team can be very competitive in 2012/2013.

• Finally and most importantly to thanks the key people that helped in a big way last season: Des Reidy supported by Alan Cusack, Mattie Bourke & Martin Kennedy and further aided by Daren Madden, Paul McAleer and Willie McDonagh for their coaching, patients and good humour The referees: The branch referees and especially the local lads, Bobby Hanaghran, Stanley Bourke & Paul McAleer The ladies: Mary McNicholas, Honor Ryder, Agnes & Valerie Sammon, Patricia & Jacqueline Prendergast, Carmel Stauton & Regina McCormack for their work in providing food for all home matches. Michael Heneghan who, like every other year I have been involved, provides huge support with organising food etc. for home matches. Stanley for keeping us informed and for helping to organise buses, referees, etc. The 26 players ,all fully paid up, for their dedication, commitment, skill and humour.
